Eugene Cherry

Eugene "Ed" J. Cherry (1938–2019) was an American painter, printmaker, and educator, and a leading figure in the Black Arts Movement. A key member of the Chicago-based art collective AfriCOBRA (African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists), he helped define a visual aesthetic that celebrated African American identity and culture. His work is characterized by the use of intense and vibrant colors, often described as "cool-ade colors," rhythmic and geometric compositions, and the integration of text and symbols. His works explore themes of family, community, and spirituality, presenting positive and empowering images. In addition to his artistic practice, Cherry had a long career as an educator, influencing generations of artists. His works are included in the permanent collections of prestigious institutions such as the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Studio Museum in Harlem, testifying to his significant contribution to 20th-century American art.
