Fernando Benítez

Fernando Benítez (1912-2000) was a Mexican writer, journalist, and historian, considered one of the most influential figures in 20th-century cultural journalism in Mexico. His career was marked by the founding and directing of important cultural supplements, including "México en la Cultura" for the newspaper *Novedades* and "La Cultura en México" for the magazine *Siempre!*, which became a reference point for the country's intelligentsia. His most celebrated work is the monumental five-volume series *Los indios de México*, an in-depth ethnographic study of indigenous cultures, the result of years of travel and field research. His other significant writings include *La ruta de Hernán Cortés* and the testimonial novel *El agua envenenada*. For his vast contribution, he received numerous awards, including the National Journalism Prize in 1975 and the prestigious National Prize for Arts and Sciences in the field of Linguistics and Literature in 1978.
