Frank 'Checker' Bourke (1921-2003) was a celebrated Australian rules football player and coach, whose career is inextricably linked to the Richmond Football Club. Active as a player from 1941 to 1950, he played as a rover and also served the club as captain-coach. Known for his courage and skill, he was a key member of the Richmond team that won the 1943 VFL premiership. His individual excellence is evidenced by his four wins of the Jack Dyer Medal, the club's best and fairest award (1941, 1944, 1946, 1947), and by his selection as captain of the Victorian state representative team. After retiring as a player, he coached Richmond from 1950 to 1952. For his contributions to the sport, Bourke was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame and was named in the Richmond Football Club's Team of the Century, confirming his legendary status.
