Frank Sundström

Frank Lendorff Sundström (1912–1993) was a Swedish actor, director, and theatre director, a central figure in his country's theatrical scene for decades. Trained at the prestigious school of the Royal Dramatic Theatre (Dramaten) in Stockholm, in 1944 he became the first director of the newly founded Malmö Stadsteater, which he successfully led for several years. He later took on the directorship of other important Swedish theatres, including the Helsingborgs stadsteater and the Uppsala stadsteater, before returning to work regularly as a director and actor at the Dramaten. Parallel to his theatre career, Sundström was an acclaimed film actor, best known internationally for his appearances in Ingmar Bergman's masterpieces such as *The Seventh Seal* (1957), *Wild Strawberries* (1957), and *The Virgin Spring* (1960). For his exceptional contribution to Swedish theatre, he received major awards, including the prestigious O'Neill-stipendiet in 1968 and the royal medal Litteris et Artibus in 1980.
