Freddie Bartholomew

Freddie Bartholomew (1924-1992), born Frederick Llewellyn Bartholomew in London, was a British actor celebrated as one of the greatest child actors of 1930s Hollywood. He achieved international fame for his role as the young David in *David Copperfield* (1935). His image as an aristocratic and well-bred child was cemented by performances in highly successful films such as *Anna Karenina* (1935), *Little Lord Fauntleroy* (1936), and especially *Captains Courageous* (1937), alongside Spencer Tracy. At the height of his success, he became the second highest-paid child actor of the era, after Shirley Temple. His popularity waned with adolescence, and his career was marked by long legal battles over control of his earnings. After serving in World War II, he left acting to work successfully in advertising and as a television producer and director. For his contribution to the motion picture industry, he was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
