George Walton Lucas Jr. is an American film director, screenwriter, and producer, primarily known for creating the Star Wars and Indiana Jones sagas. His career took off with the critical and public success of *American Graffiti* (1973), which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Director. In 1977, he wrote and directed *Star Wars*, a film that revolutionized science fiction cinema and launched one of the most influential franchises in history, for which he supervised the subsequent installments of the original trilogy as a producer and co-screenwriter. Together with Steven Spielberg, he conceived the Indiana Jones saga, producing its films. As an entrepreneur, he founded pioneering companies such as Lucasfilm, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), and Skywalker Sound, which profoundly innovated visual and sound effects. Between 1999 and 2005, he returned to direct the Star Wars prequel trilogy. In 2012, he sold Lucasfilm to The Walt Disney Company. His numerous awards include the AFI Life Achievement Award and the Kennedy Center Honors.
