
George Meader
George Meader (Minneapolis, 1888 – Westport, 1963) was an American operatic tenor. Specializing in character roles, he was particularly noted for his interpretive skills and versatility. After studying in Europe, he made his debut in Leipzig before joining the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1921, where he remained for over two decades. His most celebrated performances included the roles of Mime in Wagner's *Der Ring des Nibelungen* and Vašek in Smetana's *The Bartered Bride*. His career gained significant international recognition when he performed in the inaugural season of the Glyndebourne Festival in 1934, singing the role of Basilio in Mozart's *Le nozze di Figaro*. After retiring from the stage, he became an influential voice teacher, working at the Juilliard School. His legacy is tied to a solid career as a leading comprimario tenor and his subsequent contribution to vocal training.
