George Webster

George Webster (1911-1999) was an American painter and a leading figure of the second generation of the New York School and Abstract Expressionism. He embarked on his artistic career later in life, after studying under Hans Hofmann. His style is distinguished by a bold use of color and a thick impasto technique, often applied with a palette knife to create surfaces rich in texture and depth. His works, such as the renowned "Column paintings" series, explore the interaction between geometric forms and vibrant color fields, achieving a remarkable emotional intensity. Throughout his career, his work was widely recognized with prestigious awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1968 and grants from the Ford Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
