
Geraldine Fitzgerald
Geraldine Fitzgerald (1913-2005) was an Irish-American actress whose career spanned film, theatre, and television. She began at the Gate Theatre in Dublin before moving to Hollywood, where she quickly rose to prominence. In 1939, she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in *Wuthering Heights* and also appeared in the classic *Dark Victory*. Her subsequent filmography includes titles such as *Watch on the Rhine*, *The Pawnbroker*, and *Arthur*. Also very active on stage, she founded a street theatre company and, in 1982, received a Tony Award nomination for directing the Broadway play *Mass Appeal*. Her versatility also earned her a Daytime Emmy Award in 1975 for her performance in a television special. A naturalized U.S. citizen, she is remembered for her ability to portray strong and complex female characters both on screen and on stage.
