Gerhard Bienert

Gerhard Bienert (Berlin, 8 January 1898 – West Berlin, 23 December 1986) was a German actor whose long career spanned several of Germany's historical and political eras. He began his artistic career in the 1920s at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin under the direction of Max Reinhardt, appearing in Expressionist cinema masterpieces such as *Metropolis* (1927) and in seminal early sound films like *The Blue Angel* (1930) and *M* (1931). After the Second World War, he became a prominent figure in East Germany, working for decades as a member of Bertolt Brecht's Berliner Ensemble and playing numerous roles in DEFA film productions. His versatility as a character actor earned him wide recognition, culminating in the award of the National Prize of the GDR in 1961. He continued to work in theatre and television even after moving to West Berlin, remaining active until late in life.
