Gino Rossi

Gino Rossi (Venice, 1884 – Treviso, 1947) was an Italian painter, considered one of the pioneers of modern art in Italy. Trained in Venice, his artistic career was marked by a crucial stay in Paris in 1907, where he came into contact with the works of Gauguin and Cézanne, absorbing the innovations of Post-Impressionism and Fauvism. Upon his return to Italy, he became one of the central figures of the avant-garde exhibitions at Ca' Pesaro, distinguishing himself with a bold style that combined formal synthesis with an intense and anti-naturalistic use of color. His most notable works include *La fanciulla del fiore* and his views of Burano, Brittany, and Asolo, characterized by simplified forms and a deep lyrical sense. His promising career was tragically interrupted by his experience in the First World War and his subsequent imprisonment, which irreparably damaged his mental health. He spent the last two decades of his life in a psychiatric hospital, and his significance was fully recognized only posthumously, establishing him as a fundamental figure in the movement to overcome 19th-century tradition.
