Glynis Johns was a British actress, dancer, singer, and pianist, celebrated for her distinctive husky voice and her versatility. Her long career, which began in the 1930s, took off in the post-war era with films such as *Miranda* (1948), in which she portrayed a mermaid. She achieved international fame with the role of Mrs. Firth in *The Sundowners* (1960), for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Her most iconic performance remains that of Winifred Banks, the suffragette mother, in the Disney classic *Mary Poppins* (1964), in which she sang the song "Sister Suffragette." On stage, Johns achieved extraordinary success originating the role of Desiree Armfeldt in Stephen Sondheim's musical *A Little Night Music* (1973); her performance, which included the premiere of the celebrated song "Send in the Clowns," earned her the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. In 1998, she was named a Disney Legend for her contribution to the studio's films.
