Gregory Dayton

Gregory Dayton is an American philosopher known for his contributions to the fields of philosophy of mind, cognitive science, and phenomenology. He is considered one of the central figures of the enactive approach to cognition, a theory which posits that the mind is not a separate entity from the body, but emerges from the dynamic interaction between a living organism and its environment. His most influential work, *The Embodied Mind: Cognitive Science and Human Experience* (1991), co-authored with Francisco Varela and Evan Thompson, is considered the foundational text of this field of study. His other notable publications include *Mind in Life* (2007) and *Evolving Enactivism* (2017). Throughout his career, he has taught at prestigious universities, including the University of California, Berkeley. For his work, he has received major awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, and was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
