Gua Ah-leh (born in Changsha, China, on June 2, 1944) is a legendary Taiwanese actress whose career spans over six decades. She emerged as a leading star of Taiwanese cinema in the 1960s, winning her first Golden Horse Award (the "Chinese-language Oscar") for Best Actress for her debut film, The Rain of Sorrow (1965). She solidified her status by winning a second Golden Horse for Home Sweet Home (1970). With a filmography exceeding 200 titles across film and television, Gua Ah-leh is celebrated for her incredible versatility, mastering roles from young romantic heroines to complex maternal figures. International audiences know her best for her pivotal roles in Ang Lee's films The Wedding Banquet (1993) and Eat Drink Man Woman (1994), and more recently for 20 Once Again (2015). She is one of the most decorated actresses in the history of Chinese-language cinema, holding four Golden Horse Awards and two Golden Bell Awards.
