Gwenn Mitchell
Gwenn Mitchell, born in Vancouver on October 2, 1954, is a Canadian artist primarily known for her abstract painting. Her artistic practice focuses on large-scale canvases, characterized by the application of thin, translucent glazes of oil paint. This technique allows her to create luminous and atmospheric works, rich in chromatic depth. Primarily inspired by natural landscapes, particularly those of Canada, her work explores the interactions between light, color, and space, placing it within the field of lyrical abstraction. Trained at the Emily Carr College of Art and Design, she has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally. Her works are included in numerous prominent public and private collections, including the Canada Council Art Bank and the Vancouver Art Gallery. For her contribution to Canadian art, in 2005 she was elected a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA), one of the highest honors for an artist in the country.
