Haing S. Ngor
Haing S. Ngor was a Cambodian-American physician, actor, and author, best known for his portrayal of Dith Pran in the film "The Killing Fields" (1984). Although he was a gynecologist with no prior acting experience, his performance, based on his real-life survival of the Cambodian genocide under the Khmer Rouge regime, earned him immediate critical acclaim. For this role, he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, a Golden Globe in the same category, and two BAFTA Awards—one for Best Actor and one for Best Newcomer. After his debut, Ngor continued his acting career, appearing in films such as Oliver Stone's "Heaven & Earth" (1993) and various television productions. He used his fame for humanitarian activism, founding an organization to help victims in Cambodia. He recounted his dramatic experience in his autobiography, "Haing Ngor: A Cambodian Odyssey."
