Han Ying-Chieh

Han Ying-Chieh (1927-1991) was a Chinese actor, martial arts choreographer, and director, known for his fundamental contribution to Hong Kong cinema. Trained at the Peking Opera, he began his career as a stuntman and choreographer for the Shaw Brothers Studio, before becoming a key figure in *wuxia* cinema, collaborating with director King Hu on seminal films such as *Dragon Inn* (1967) and *A Touch of Zen* (1971). His name is inextricably linked to Golden Harvest and Bruce Lee, for whom he choreographed the fights and played the main antagonist in two classics of the genre: *The Big Boss* (1971), as the "Big Boss" Hsiao Mi, and *Fist of Fury* (1972). He continued his career as an actor and director into the 1980s. Although he did not receive any major formal awards, Han Ying-Chieh is universally recognized as one of the most influential action directors of his generation, whose work defined the aesthetics of cinematic combat before and during the global explosion of kung fu.
