Hans Zander
Hans Zander (Gdańsk, 1937 – Hamburg, 1991) was a German painter, sculptor, and graphic artist, and one of the leading exponents of Fantastic Realism. His artistic career began after his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg, where he became a central figure in the local art scene. In the 1960s, he was one of the co-founders of the "Zebra" group, a movement that opposed the dominance of abstract art in favor of a new and meticulous figurative realism. His works, often large-scale and technically flawless, are distinguished by complex allegorical compositions that draw on mythology, history, and literature, reinterpreted with sharp irony and a critical view of contemporary society. His body of work includes detailed oil paintings, drawings, and sculptures. For his significant contribution to art, Zander received several awards, including the prestigious Edwin Scharff Prize from the City of Hamburg in 1976.
