Harry Carter

Harry Carter (1901-1982) was a British typographer, type designer, and printing historian whose career combined the practice of design with academic research. After working for major establishments such as the Kynoch Press and the Nonesuch Press, he made his most significant contribution as an archivist at Oxford University Press. There, he dedicated himself to cataloguing and reorganizing the university's vast collection of historical punches and matrices, particularly the celebrated Fell types. His principal work, *A View of Early Typography up to about 1600* (1969), is considered a foundational text on the history of typography. He also completed Stanley Morison's work on the Fell types and edited an important edition of Fournier's *Manuel Typographique*. For his profound erudition, he was appointed Lyell Reader in Bibliography at the University of Oxford, consolidating his reputation as one of the key figures in 20th-century typographic historiography.
