Herman Koto
Herman Koto, born in 1963 in Pariaman, West Sumatra, is one of the most important Indonesian sculptors of his generation. His artistic career is characterized by a profound connection to natural materials, particularly wood, which he shapes to create organic and monumental forms. His works, often large-scale, explore themes such as spirituality, the relationship between humanity and nature, and the traditions of his Minangkabau culture, combining them with a contemporary and abstract visual language. Koto has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions both in Indonesia and internationally, earning him a prominent place in the Southeast Asian art scene. A significant milestone in his career came in 2015 when he won the prestigious UOB Painting of the Year (Indonesia) award in the sculpture category for his work "Tubuh-tubuh dalam Ruang," an achievement that solidified his status as a master of contemporary Indonesian sculpture.
