For this performance, he won the Newcomer of the Year award at the Japan Academy Prize, an accolade that launched his career. In subsequent years, he consolidated his reputation by appearing in films by internationally renowned directors, including significant roles in Takeshi Kitano's *Hana-bi* (1997) and Takashi Miike's cult film *Audition* (1999).
