Horst Buchholz (Berlin, 4 December 1933 – Berlin, 3 March 2003) was a German actor. Nicknamed the "German James Dean" for his roles as a young rebel, he rose to fame in Germany with the film *Die Halbstarken* (1956). His talent was soon recognized internationally, earning him the Volpi Cup at the Venice Film Festival for *Sky Without Stars* (1955). His career took off in Hollywood, where he played iconic roles such as the young gunslinger Chico in John Sturges' *The Magnificent Seven* (1960) and the idealistic communist Otto Piffl in Billy Wilder's comedy *One, Two, Three!* (1961). Among his other notable performances is *Fanny* (1961). His filmography also includes numerous European productions and a memorable role in Roberto Benigni's Oscar-winning film *Life Is Beautiful* (1997), where he played Dr. Lessing. Throughout his career, he received several awards, including the Deutscher Filmpreis and several Bambi Awards, consolidating his reputation as a versatile and world-class actor.
