Hugh Hurd
Hugh Hurd (1925–1995) was an American actor and activist, best known for his leading role in John Cassavetes' debut film, *Shadows* (1959), a foundational work of American independent cinema. His career developed predominantly in theater, particularly in the Off-Broadway circuit, where he was a prominent figure. Parallel to his artistic career, he was a dedicated civil rights activist and co-founder of the Committee for the Employment of Negro Performers, which advocated for greater opportunities for African American actors. In addition to *Shadows*, his filmography includes appearances in films such as *For Love of Ivy* (1968) and a minor role in Cassavetes' *A Woman Under the Influence* (1974). Despite a long stage career, his performance in *Shadows* remains his most celebrated contribution, essential to the film's critical success, which won the Pasinetti Award at the Venice Film Festival.
