
Hugo Carvana
Hugo Carvana (Rio de Janeiro, June 4, 1937 – Rio de Janeiro, October 4, 2014) was a Brazilian actor, director, and screenwriter, and a prominent figure in the country's national cinema. His acting career took off in the 1960s, when he became one of the iconic faces of Cinema Novo, participating in landmark films such as Glauber Rocha's "Terra em Transe" (1967) and "O Dragão da Maldade contra o Santo Guerreiro" (1969). As a director, he debuted with the critically and publicly acclaimed "Vai Trabalhar, Vagabundo" (1973), a film that explored the figure of the Carioca "malandro," an archetype he would revisit in other films like "Se Segura, Malandro!" (1978). Active until his final years, he worked on numerous film and television productions, including popular telenovelas. Throughout his long career, he received major accolades, including several Kikito awards at the Gramado Film Festival and trophies at the Festival de Brasília, cementing his status as an icon of Brazilian cinema.
