Imre Chmelik
Imre Chmelik (Budapest, March 25, 1932 – Budapest, November 24, 2017) was a Hungarian fencer, specializing in sabre. A member of the legendary Hungarian team of the 1950s, he reached the peak of his competitive career by winning the gold medal in the team sabre competition at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. His outstanding record also includes two consecutive world titles in the same event, won in Paris in 1957 and Philadelphia in 1958, consolidating Hungarian dominance in the discipline. An engineer by training, after retiring from competition he successfully embarked on a career as a fencing master and coach, contributing to the development of new generations of athletes. He is remembered as one of the key figures of the golden era of Hungarian sabre, known for his technique and team spirit.
