Jack Casady

Jack Casady, born John William Casady in Washington, D.C. on April 13, 1944, is an American bassist, considered one of the pioneers of the electric bass in rock. He is best known as a founding member of Jefferson Airplane, an iconic band of the San Francisco psychedelic scene. His melodic and contrapuntal style, combined with a powerful and distinctive sound, characterized landmark albums such as *Surrealistic Pillow* (1967) and *Volunteers* (1969), elevating the role of the bass from a simple rhythmic instrument to a lead voice. Concurrently, in 1969, he formed Hot Tuna with guitarist Jorma Kaukonen, a project dedicated to acoustic and electric blues and rock, which became his primary focus after the breakup of Jefferson Airplane. He has also worked as a session musician with artists such as Jimi Hendrix. For his contributions, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 as a member of Jefferson Airplane and, with the band, received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. His influence on the role of the bass in rock remains immense.
