Jack Drummond

Jack Cecil Drummond (1891-1952) was a British biochemist and a pioneer in the field of nutrition and the study of vitamins. His academic career was primarily spent at University College London, where he became Professor of Biochemistry. He is known for proposing in 1920 to remove the final "e" from the term "vitamine," coined by Casimir Funk, creating the word "vitamin" which is now universally used for such compounds. During the Second World War, he served as the Chief Scientific Adviser to the UK Ministry of Food, playing a crucial role in managing rationing and formulating food policies, such as the "national loaf," to maintain the population's health. His most famous work, written with Anne Wilbraham, is *The Englishman's Food: A History of Five Centuries of English Diet* (1939), a seminal study on the history of the English diet. For his scientific contributions, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1944 and was knighted in 1946 for his wartime service. His life ended tragically in 1952 when he was murdered in France, along with his wife and daughter.
