James "J.Y." Young, born on November 14, 1949, is an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter, best known as a founding member of the rock band Styx. His style, characterized by a hard rock approach and powerful riffs, provided an essential counterpoint to the group's more progressive and melodic elements. He is the writer and lead vocalist on several notable songs, including "Miss America" and "Snowblind." In addition to his ongoing commitment to Styx, he has pursued a solo career, releasing albums such as *City Slicker* (1985) and *Out on a Day Pass* (1995). As a member of the band, he has achieved worldwide recognition, contributing to an exceptional series of four consecutive multi-platinum albums between 1977 and 1981. Along with bassist Chuck Panozzo, he is one of only two members to have played on every album released by Styx, solidifying his fundamental role in the group's history.
