János Balogh

János Balogh (1913–2002) was a Hungarian zoologist, ecologist, and academic, internationally recognized as one of the pioneers of soil zoology and acarology. His career was closely linked to Eötvös Loránd University and the Hungarian Natural History Museum. He was a tireless field researcher, leading numerous scientific expeditions to tropical regions of Africa, South America, and New Guinea, which significantly enriched the knowledge of the biogeography and diversity of Oribatid mites. He authored fundamental works that laid the foundations for community ecology, including "A Zootönológia Alapjai" (The Foundations of Zoocenology) and the monumental "The Oribatid Genera of the World". For his outstanding scientific contributions, he became a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and was awarded his country's highest honors, including the prestigious Kossuth Prize twice (1954 and 1963) and the State Prize, consolidating his reputation as a leading figure in 20th-century biology.
