Jean Aurenche

Jean Aurenche (1903-1992) was one of the most influential screenwriters in 20th-century French cinema. His career is inextricably linked to his prolific collaboration with Pierre Bost, with whom he formed a renowned artistic partnership. Together, they became the leading exponents of the "Tradition of Quality," specializing in meticulous adaptations of literary works for directors such as Claude Autant-Lara and René Clément. Among their most notable works are *La Symphonie Pastorale* (1946), *Forbidden Games* (1952), which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Screenplay, and *La Traversée de Paris* (1956). Although their style was criticized by the French New Wave, Aurenche enjoyed a second successful period collaborating with Bertrand Tavernier, for whom he wrote *The Clockmaker of St. Paul* (1974) and *Let Joy Reign Supreme* (1975), winning the César Award for both. His career was finally honored with an honorary César Award in 1984.
