Jean Aymé

Jean Aymé, born Georges Aymé (Geneva, April 25, 1876 – Paris, January 17, 1931), was a French actor of Swiss origin, active primarily during the silent film era and the beginning of the sound era. Specializing in character roles, he is best remembered for portraying antagonistic or ambiguous figures. His fame is inextricably linked to his iconic role in the surrealist short film *Un Chien Andalou* (1929) by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí, where he plays the man who, in the famous opening sequence, slits a woman's eye with a razor. His career includes collaborations with prominent French film directors of the time, such as Jean Renoir for the film *Nana* (1926) and Marcel L'Herbier for *L'Argent* (1928). Although his premature death cut his career short, his main recognition lies in his indelible contribution to avant-garde cinema, which secured him a permanent place in the history of film thanks to one of the most powerful and shocking images ever created.
