Jean Rochefort (Paris, April 29, 1930 – Paris, October 9, 2017) was a French actor and an iconic figure of European cinema. Trained at the Conservatoire national supérieur d'art dramatique, he began his career in theater before establishing himself on the big screen starting in the 1960s. His career took off in the 1970s, thanks to roles in successful comedies such as *The Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe* (1972) and *An Elephant Can Be Extremely Deceptive* (1976). He demonstrated great versatility in dramatic works, winning the César Award for Best Supporting Actor for Bertrand Tavernier's *Let Joy Reign Supreme* (1976) and for Best Actor for *Le Crabe-Tambour* (1977). His long and prolific filmography includes memorable collaborations with director Patrice Leconte, in films such as *The Hairdresser's Husband* (1990) and *Ridicule* (1996). Recognizable for his ironic elegance and distinctive mustache, he is considered one of the most beloved and respected faces of French cinema, whose career was crowned with an honorary César in 1999.
