Jeanette MacDonald

Jeanette MacDonald (1903-1965) was an acclaimed American singer and actress, best known for her roles in musical films of the 1930s and 1940s. A lyric soprano, she began her career on Broadway before achieving fame in Hollywood with the advent of sound films. She formed iconic screen partnerships, first with Maurice Chevalier in films such as *The Love Parade* (1929) and *The Merry Widow* (1934), and then, with great success, with baritone Nelson Eddy in eight films, including the famous operettas *Naughty Marietta* (1935) and *Rose Marie* (1936). She also demonstrated versatility in dramatic roles, such as in the box-office hit *San Francisco* (1936), alongside Clark Gable. Her career also continued successfully in opera, concerts, and radio. For her contribution to the motion picture industry, she was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and her handprints and footprints are preserved at the TCL Chinese Theatre.
