Jerzy Skolimowski

Jerzy Skolimowski (Łódź, May 5, 1938) is a Polish film director, screenwriter, actor, and painter, a key figure in his country's cinema "new wave." He debuted with a partially autobiographical trilogy, which includes *Identification Marks: None* (1964), and established himself as a screenwriter by co-writing Roman Polański's *Knife in the Water* (1962). His career continued successfully abroad, where he won the Golden Bear in Berlin for *Le départ* (1967) and the Grand Prix at Cannes for *The Shout* (1978). His most noted works also include the cult film *Deep End* (1970) and the politically astute *Moonlighting* (1982). After a long hiatus dedicated to painting, he returned to directing, winning the Special Jury Prize in Venice with *Essential Killing* (2010) and achieving global success with *EO* (2022), which was awarded the Jury Prize at Cannes and nominated for an Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. In 2016, he was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival.
