Jim Backus (1913-1989) was a versatile American actor, known for his distinctive baritone voice and comedic roles. Famous as the voice of Mr. Magoo in animated cartoons and, on TV, as Thurston Howell III in *Gilligan's Island*, his film career was equally prolific.
In film, he was noted for often portraying wealthy, pompous characters, or comically authoritative figures, often with a touch of geniality. Among his most significant roles was Frank Stark, James Dean's father, in *Rebel Without a Cause* (1955), which showcased his ability in dramatic roles as well.
