Jūkichi Uno

Jūkichi Uno (1914-1988) was a Japanese actor and director, a prominent figure in post-war cinema and theater. In 1950, he co-founded the Gekidan Mingei theater company, which helped to modernize the Japanese stage. His film career is inextricably linked to director Kaneto Shindō, for whom he played memorable roles that brought him international recognition. His most celebrated performances include the film *The Naked Island* (1960), for which he won the Blue Ribbon Award for Best Supporting Actor, the supernatural thriller *Onibaba* (1964), and the horror film *Kuroneko* (1968). In addition to his extensive work as an actor, Uno also directed several films, demonstrating considerable artistic versatility. His intense stage presence and ability to portray complex characters established him as one of the most influential actors of his generation in the Japanese cultural landscape.
