Joan Standing was a British actress, born in Worcestershire, who worked primarily in Hollywood during the silent film era and the early sound period. Specializing in supporting and character roles, often portraying comedic or domestic figures, her career took off in the 1920s with appearances in notable films. Among her most significant performances of the period are her role in Erich von Stroheim's masterpiece, *Greed* (1924), and her part in *The Iron Mask* (1929).
