João Pessoa Mattos
João Pessoa Cavalcanti de Albuquerque (1878-1930) was a Brazilian jurist and politician whose career had a decisive impact on the history of his country. After serving as a Justice of the Supreme Military Tribunal, he was elected president (governor) of the state of Paraíba in 1928, where he implemented significant administrative and fiscal reforms. His national prominence grew when, in 1930, he ran for the vice presidency of Brazil as Getúlio Vargas's running mate for the Liberal Alliance. The electoral defeat, widely perceived as fraudulent, and his subsequent assassination in Recife on July 26, 1930, for a combination of political and personal reasons, became the primary trigger for the 1930 Revolution, which brought Vargas to power. In posthumous recognition, the capital of the state of Paraíba was renamed João Pessoa in his honor. Additionally, the state flag was modified to include the word "NEGO," symbolizing his refusal to support the government's presidential candidate.
