John Osborne

John James Osborne (1929–1994) was a British playwright, screenwriter, and actor, considered one of the most influential figures of post-war theatre. His career was launched with the 1956 play, *Look Back in Anger*, which became the manifesto of the "Angry Young Men" movement. The play introduced a raw realism and strong social critique, breaking with the tradition of bourgeois theatre and giving voice to the disillusionment of an entire generation. His other significant works include *The Entertainer* (1957), written for Laurence Olivier, and *Luther* (1961). In addition to theatre, Osborne achieved success as a screenwriter, winning the 1964 Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for the film *Tom Jones*. His polemical style and his ability to capture social unrest left an indelible mark on modern British theatre.
