John Wood

John Wood (1930-2011) was an acclaimed English actor, celebrated for his extraordinary career spanning theater and cinema. Known for his distinctive voice and profound interpretive intelligence, he was a pillar of the Royal Shakespeare Company and a Broadway star, winning a Tony Award for his performance in Tom Stoppard's "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead" (1968), becoming one of Stoppard's definitive interpreters. Although theater was his primary arena, Wood also left an indelible mark on cinema with memorable roles. These notably include the enigmatic Dr. Stephen Falken in WarGames (1983), the Bishop in Ladyhawke (1985), and appearances in films like The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) and Chocolat (2000). His mastery in tackling complex texts, from Shakespeare to Stoppard, made him one of the most respected actors of his generation, appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).
