**John Wray** (1887-1940) was an American character actor, known for his ability to portray intense and often sinister roles in 1930s cinema. His most iconic performance remains that of Ace Hicky, the frenetic and ruthless managing editor, in Lewis Milestone's original film *The Front Page* (1931).

He was also memorable in secondary but incisive roles in *All Quiet on the Western Front* (1930), where he played the cruel instructor Himmelstoss, and in *Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde* (1931). Wray excelled at embodying tormented, frenetic, or cruel characters, often with a penetrating gaze and a marked stage presence that made him a distinctive face in the dramatic and noir cinema of the era.
