Johnny Sekka

Johnny Sekka, born Lamine Sekka in Senegal, was a Gambian-British actor, considered one of the pioneers of Black cinema and theatre in the United Kingdom. After serving in the Royal Air Force, he began his career on stage, notably at the Royal Court Theatre in London. He rose to prominence on the big screen with the drama film *Flame in the Streets* (1961), a performance that earned him a BAFTA nomination for Most Promising Newcomer. His filmography includes appearances in major international productions such as *Woman of Straw* (1964) and the epic *Khartoum* (1966). One of his most iconic and acclaimed roles was that of Bilal ibn Rabah, the first Muezzin of Islam, in Moustapha Akkad's film *The Message* (1976). After later moving to the United States, he is also known to television audiences for playing Dr. Benjamin Kyle in the pilot episode of the science fiction series *Babylon 5*.
