Jon House

Jon House (1945–2012) was a British art historian, considered a leading authority in the field of 19th-century French painting, with a particular focus on Impressionism. For much of his career, he was a professor of art history at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London. His critical approach was distinguished by its ability to integrate the formal analysis of artworks with their socio-historical context, examining the conditions of their production and reception. His most celebrated work is the book *Monet: Nature into Art* (1986), a seminal text in the study of the artist. He also wrote important essays on Renoir and Degas and curated influential international exhibitions, such as the major Monet retrospective held at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1990. His work is credited with profoundly renewing the understanding of Impressionism, shifting the focus from purely stylistic analysis to a more complex and contextualized reading of the movement.
