José Villasante
José María Villasante de Bofarull (Tortosa, 1920 – Barcelona, 1990) was a Spanish painter, trained at the Escola de la Llotja in Barcelona and known primarily as a portraitist. His ability to capture the psychology of his subjects, combined with a rigorous technique and rich, textural brushwork, made him one of the most sought-after artists by high society, the intellectual world, and European royal houses. Among his most celebrated works is the official portrait of King Juan Carlos I of Spain, as well as those of other prominent figures such as Salvador Dalí. Although portraiture was his genre of choice, his artistic production also includes landscapes and still lifes, executed with the same mastery. For his merits, he was appointed a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Jorge in Barcelona and received numerous national and international awards throughout his career, consolidating his reputation as a master of modern realism.
