Joseph Egger
Joseph Egger (Donawitz, 18 May 1889 – Gablitz, 29 August 1966) was an Austrian actor. Primarily a stage actor for most of his career, he achieved international fame late in life through his appearances in Sergio Leone's western films. He is best known for the role of Piripero, the coffin-maker, in *A Fistful of Dollars* (1964) and for that of the old prophet in the subsequent *For a Few Dollars More* (1965). His peculiar physiognomy, characterized by a gaunt, almost toothless face, combined with an eccentric acting style, made him an immediately recognizable and unforgettable figure. Although he received no official awards, Egger is considered an iconic character actor of the Spaghetti Western genre, whose contribution is widely appreciated by critics and enthusiasts for defining, with his presence, the grotesque and memorable atmosphere of Leone's cinema. His film career, though brief and concentrated in the final years of his life, left an indelible mark on the collective imagination.
