Juan de Landa

Juan de Landa, born Juan de Landaeta y Urtubi (Mutriku, January 27, 1894 – Rome, March 18, 1968), was a Spanish actor of Basque origin. After beginning his career in Spain and France, he achieved his greatest prominence in Italian cinema during the 1940s, becoming a characteristic figure of the Neorealist period. His most celebrated and iconic performance is that of Giuseppe Bragana, the brutal and possessive betrayed husband in Luchino Visconti's film *Ossessione* (1943), a work considered pivotal to the birth of Neorealism. His imposing physical presence made him ideal for dramatic and high-impact roles. He acted in other notable films such as Alberto Lattuada's *Il bandito* (1946) and *Senza pietà* (1948), and Luigi Zampa's *Anni difficili* (1948). For his intense performance in *Il bandito*, he won the Nastro d'Argento (Silver Ribbon) in 1947 for Best Supporting Actor, definitively cementing his significant contribution to post-war Italian cinema.
