Jules Cowles (1877-1943) was an American character actor, primarily active during the silent film era. Known for his imposing physical presence, he was often cast in roles as tough characters, antagonists, or authority figures. His career is associated with iconic films of the period, most notably his memorable performance in Charlie Chaplin's *The Kid* (1921), where he played the truck driver who attempts to take the child away. He also worked alongside other stars of the era, such as Douglas Fairbanks in *His Majesty, the American* (1919) and Lon Chaney in *The Penalty* (1920). With the advent of sound, Cowles continued to act, albeit in smaller roles, in productions such as *Scarface* (1932). Although he received no formal awards, his primary recognition lies in his contribution of intense performances to some of the most important films of early cinema, solidifying his image as an effective supporting actor.
