Kiyoshi Awazu

Kiyoshi Awazu (1929-2009) was an influential Japanese graphic designer and a prominent figure of the post-war period. Largely self-taught, he emerged on the design scene in 1955 with his celebrated poster "Umi o kaese" (Return the Sea), which earned him immediate recognition. Closely associated with the Metabolism architectural movement, Awazu developed a unique visual style characterized by the complex layering of images, blending elements of Japanese tradition, such as ukiyo-e, with modern techniques like photomontage and psychedelia. His multifaceted career encompassed posters, book design, set design, and collaborations in film and architecture, such as his work for the Osaka Expo '70. For his contributions, he received numerous international awards, including prizes at the Warsaw and Brno poster biennales, and was awarded the Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon in his home country, confirming his status as a master of 20th-century Japanese design.
