Kurt Raab

Kurt Raab (1941-1988) was a multifaceted German actor, screenwriter, production designer, and director, and a central figure in the New German Cinema. He is best known for his intense and prolific collaboration with director Rainer Werner Fassbinder, becoming one of the key members of his Antiteater collective. As an actor, he played memorable roles in numerous Fassbinder films, including *The Merchant of Four Seasons* (1972), *Fox and His Friends* (1975), *Satan's Brew* (1976), and the television series *Berlin Alexanderplatz* (1980). In addition to acting, his contribution as a production designer was fundamental to defining the often claustrophobic and stylized visual aesthetic of many of Fassbinder's works. After his break with the director, he directed and starred in his most celebrated project, *Tenderness of the Wolves* (1973). Throughout his career, he received major awards, including the Deutscher Filmpreis (German Film Award) for both Best Production Design and Best Actor in a Leading Role for *Bolwieser* (1977), directed by Fassbinder himself.
