Lars Hanson

Lars Hanson (1886-1965) was a Swedish stage and film actor, known for his intense performances. His career took off in Sweden with Mauritz Stiller's film *The Saga of Gösta Berling* (1924), alongside Greta Garbo. Following this success, he moved to Hollywood with Stiller and Garbo, becoming an American silent film star under contract with MGM. His most celebrated roles from this period include *The Scarlet Letter* (1926) and *The Wind* (1928), both with Lillian Gish. With the advent of sound, his Swedish accent limited his opportunities in Hollywood, prompting him to return to his native country. In Sweden, he established himself as one of the greatest stage actors of his time, becoming a leading figure at the Royal Dramatic Theatre (Dramaten) in Stockholm for decades. For his outstanding contribution to theater, he was one of the first to receive the prestigious Eugene O'Neill Award in 1956.
